Beith Community Development Trust
In 2009 groups, clubs and teams in BEITH, with a shared interest in health, well-being, sport and activity came together to discuss the lack of suitable facilities and venues in the town. Years of neglect and lack of maintenance has left facilities in a poor state of repair or derelict, clubs, groups and teams were forced to source facilities and venues out of town, leading to increased transport and activity costs. Consequently an alliance of clubs, groups and teams commissioned a report in 2009 on the feasibility of community ownership of sports facilities in BeitH, and the basis of its recommendations BEITH COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT TRUST (BCDT) was established.
BCDT membership is open to anyone with a KA15 (Beith) postcode, and is made up of groups, clubs, teams and individuals. BCDT and its affiliated members currently deliver sport, health and wellbeing and fun activities to approx 350 children, young people and adults on a weekly basis. The children’s programmes is made up of 10 football teams ranging from age 4 – age 16 who train twice a week and play competitive games at weekends. Hockey and Athletics run training clubs and take part in competitive events. Our community programme ‘Wee Shots’ is made up of a series of taster sessions in a variety of venues in order to make activity accessible and attractive to all ages and stages of the community. The Women’s group meets once a week, Family Footy fun programme runs weekly. 2 adult amateur teams train twice a week and compete weekly and our Junior Team regularly attracts gate admissions in excess of 300, - over 10% of the community are involved in the activities of our members, from supporting, volunteering and participating.
BCDT is managed by 7 directors who were selected and elected to their roles because of their particular area of expertise and skills. Our directors have skills and expertise in business management, new business development, community development, participation, finance, sports development, construction and logistics. BCDT is a company limited by guarantee and we have applied for charitable status.
